  • Sentencing for corporate manslaughter

    The Sentencing Guidelines Council have launched their guidance for judges on sentencing organisations convicted of corporate manslaughter on or after 15 February 2010.

  • Leading health and safety to improve performance

    Research undertaken over the summer by LGAAR on behalf of LGE indicates that 56 per cent of strategic managers within the local government sample are aware of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) / Institute of Directors guidance, 'Leading health and safety at work'.

  • New strategy for mental health at work

    The government has launched 'Working our way to better mental health: a framework for action'. This is the first ever national strategy for mental health and work.

  • UK implements European social partner agreement on violence at work

    The UK agreement was launched on 17 November. We encourage local authorities to download the booklet and assess whether their existing policies implement the guidance.

  • Safety manager takes the sensible route to council worker of the year award

    Andy Hollingshead, health and safety manager for Leicestershire adult social care, was awarded the council worker of the year award for transformation 2009 at the LGA conference gala dinner held on 2 July.

  • Getting the well-being message

  • LGA supports Health and Safety Executive strategy launch

    The new Health and Safety Executive strategy, 'The health and safety of Great Britain: be part of the solution' had its media launch on 3 June 2009 at Westminster Central Hall.

  • Mental health booklet sent to every school

    Last year a booklet on common mental health problems for teachers and other school based staff was produced. To secure penetration of the message right into schools a hard copy has now been sent to the head teacher of every primary and secondary school in England and Wales.

  • LGE and LACORS submit joint response to Health and Safety Executive strategy consultation

    As part of the closer working between LGE and LACORS on strategic health and safety issues which impact upon local authorities - both as employers/duty holders and regulators/enforcers - a joint submission was made to the Health and Safety Executive strategy consultation by the two organisations on behalf of the LGA group.

  • Health, work and wellbeing countrywide events

    A series of country-wide events are to be hosted by the cross-Government Health, Work and Wellbeing team. Taking place across the English regions and in Wales and Scotland between March and May the events are intended to showcase work already underway to promote health improvement within the workplace and encourage other employers to take action to improve the health of their workforce.

  • Asbestos: Health and Safety Executive launch their hidden killer campaign

    The Health and Safety Executive has launched a campaign to draw attention to the dangers of exposure to asbestos fibres. Running throughout October and November 2008, the campaign seeks to alert tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians and carpenters to the risks they run if they do not take steps to prevent exposure to asbestos.
