    The Health and Safety Executive has redesigned its webpages about asbestos to clearly show the information on the risks associated with asbestos, those at risk of exposure, the management issues, and preventative precautions.

  • Cyberbullying: supporting school staff

    The Department for Children, Schools and Families has launched new guidance on cyberbullying for staff in schools. The guidance provides information which those other than teachers may also find useful to assist in recognising the potentially damaging use of existing and emerging technologies, and to inform workplace policies and procedures.

  • Heath and Safety Executive launch boardroom stress awareness campaign

    To ensure that directors and HR managers fully appreciate the issue and impact of work-related stress on their organisation, the Health and Safety Executive have launched a new stress website which focuses on the role of chief executives and board members in addressing stress in the workplace.

    The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in association with LGE, WLGA, COSLA, HSE and relevant local government trade unions have issued a guide for elected members to help them understand their roles and responsibilities on health and safety within the council.

    In response to the continued controversy caused by inconsistent and insensitive action by some burial authorities, the Ministry of Justice have recently issued guidance on managing the risks associated with memorials and gravestones.

  • Penalties ratcheted up for health and safety breaches

    New penalties come into force in January 2009 for breaches of health and safety legislation. The Health and Safety (Offences) Act 2008 not only increases fines for health and safety offence but now allows for custodial sentences to be imposed for a wide range of breaches in both Magistrates and Crown Courts.

  • Government response to Carol Black's review into health and work

    On 25 November the Government's response to Carol Black's wide-ranging review 'Working for a healthier tomorrow' was launched. LGE submitted evidence to the original review and also assisted with the response by providing information on local government initiatives aimed at securing the health and wellbeing of local authority employees.

    In October 2007 the Institute of Directors and the then Health and Safety Commission launched joint guidance entitled "Leading health and safety at work". The guidance is intended to apply equally to the private, public and voluntary sectors and was seen as the way forward after much debate about whether new statutory duties should be imposed upon directors.
