Health and safety advisory services

We provide local authorities with the information and support needed to deliver the central government's health and safety strategy requirements.

Working closely with practitioners, government departments, the HSE and other organisations, we strive to improve local authorities' performance on health and safety at work by:

  • providing strategic guidance on obligations as employers
  • assisting councils to contribute to the government's health and safety targets and acting as exemplars of good practice
  • providing support to councils’ health and safety practitioners

We also provide the local authority employers view to government departments and agencies to ensure they are adequately considered within their policy-making process.

In addition, we chair the health and safety practitioners panel, which draws together local authority health and safety practitioners from regions across England and Wales, as well as representatives from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the Core Cities Group.

Our health and safety advisor can provide advice and guidance on a number of key health and safety issues, including:

  • health and safety management
  • annual health and safety report
  • influencing the health and safety performance of contractors through the supply chain
  • provision and access to occupational health services
  • the government’s health and safety strategy
  • the government's health, work and wellbeing strategy
  • elected members' role and responsibilities
  • European health and safety strategy
