Police officer pay scales can be found in PNB joint circulars. Police Officer pay scales are broken down into three ranks; Federated ranks, Superintendents and Chief Constables. These pay rates apply to all officers throughout the UK.

How does the Competency Related Threshold Payment (CRTP) scheme  work?

This scheme is available to officers in the Federated ranks who have served for a year at the maximum of their pay scale and who satisfy the requirements of the scheme.

Access to the payment will depend on the individual demonstrating high professional competence under each of the broad headings:

  • Professional competence and results
  • Commitment to the job
  • Relations with the public and colleagues
  • Willingness to learn and adjust to new circumstances.

Further details on the scheme can be located in PNB circular 02/17

How does the Special Priority Payment (SPP) scheme work?

The Special Priority Payment Scheme is targeted at frontline operational officers that

  • Carry a significantly higher responsibility level than the norm for the rank; or
  • Present special difficulties in recruitment and retention; or
  • Have specially demanding working conditions and working environments.

To qualify for payment, officers must be fully competent in and highly committed to their duties and responsibilities.

Payments will be made annually on a one off basis and should be no less than £500 and no more than £3000 normally, although exceptionally, payments of up to £5000 may be made.

Further details on the scheme can be located in PNB circular 03/16 and an Official Side circular on our website:

How does the Chief Officer bonus scheme work?

The bonus scheme is operated by the police authority in relation to all chief officers, in consultation with HMIC.  It provides for non-pensionable bonuses of up to 15% of pensionable pay for Chief Constables; up to 12.5% for Deputy Chief Constables; and up to 10% for Assistant Chief Constables, with the same bonus ceilings for equivalent London ranks.

The scheme is voluntary for those Chief Officers in post at 1 April 2004 but otherwise it is mandatory. Payment of bonuses will take account of chief officers’ Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) and their contribution to force performance in achieving objectives as set out in national and local policing plans and will reflect data supplied centrally by the appropriate agencies.

Further details on the scheme can be located in PNB circular 04/05 and accompanying guidance on our website.

How does the Performance Development Review (PDR) scheme work?

To encourage the continuous improvement of police performance by rewarding those chief officers whose performance is exceptional.

The principal aim of the PDR scheme is to foster and support the performance and further development of individual chief officers in the police service.

Further details and guidance can be located in PNB circular 04/05 and accompanying guidance on our website.

What are the arrangements for the salary sacrifice scheme?
